- Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury dies from pneumonia induced by AIDS. Consequently, "Bohemian Rhapsody" goes to number one in the UK for the second time, the only song to ever go to number one at Christmas more than once in the same version. It has now spent 14 weeks at number one.
- KISS drummer Eric Carr dies from complications of heart cancer.
- Def Leppard guitarist Steve Clark dies on January 8 due to compression of the brain stem from excessive alcohol mixed with anti-depressants and painkillers (as a result of a rib injury).
- Izzy Stradlin quits Guns N' Roses.
- Bryan Adams's 16-week stay at the top of the UK Singles Chart is finally ended by U2 single "The Fly", having already set a new record for the longest consecutive stay at the top of the UK Singles Chart.
